December birthstones include several options: Tanzanite, Turquoise, & Blue Zircon are the most popular.

Tanzanite, is a relative newcomer to the colored gemstone world. The vibrant stones are found in Tanzania, which give this beautiful stone its name. They were identified to be belonging to the mineral family zoisite in 1962. It was not until 1967, that gemologists were able to locate the primary source for the Tanzanite: the Merelani Hills of Tanzania.

Because of its popularity, the tanzanite was officially added as a December birthstone 2002. The tanzanite birthstone is often described as “velvety,” mostly because of its deep and saturated color, ranging from a pure, rich blue to violet.

Tanzanite is also given to commemorate the 24th wedding anniversary.
